A Guide to Choosing the Right Glass for Your Home
Glass is a versatile and beautiful material, but not all glass is created equal. The right type of glass can enhance safety, improve energy efficiency, and provide aesthetic benefits. Here’s a guide to the most common types of glass we use in our projects at Rainbow Aluminium and Glass Co.
1. Tempered (Toughened) Glass
This is a type of safety glass that has been treated by heat or chemicals to increase its strength. If it does break, it shatters into small, blunt-edged pieces rather than sharp shards, making it much safer. We use tempered glass for shower doors, glass railings, and tabletops.
2. Laminated Glass
Laminated glass consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together with an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). If the glass breaks, the fragments stick to the interlayer. This makes it ideal for security applications, such as storefronts and balcony railings, as well as for reducing noise transmission.
3. Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)
Also known as double or triple glazing, IGUs consist of two or three glass panes separated by a vacuum or gas-filled space. This design provides excellent thermal insulation, reducing heat transfer and helping to lower your energy bills. IGUs are the standard for all our exterior windows, doors, and glassrooms.
4. Low-E (Low-Emissivity) Glass
Low-E glass has a microscopic, transparent coating that reflects long-wave infrared energy (heat). This helps keep your home cooler in the summer by reflecting the sun’s heat away, and warmer in the winter by reflecting internal heat back into the room. It’s an essential feature for the Dubai climate.
